Ad inventory

Ad inventory is the total amount of advertising space a publisher has available for sale. It is measured in the number of impressions (ad views) that can be shown to visitors in a given period of time on its digital properties (websites, apps, newsletters, etc.).

2. What is it for / why is it important?

Ad inventory is the primary resource through which a publisher generates advertising revenue. Proper management is essential to maximizing profits, as not all inventory has the same value. The quality of each individual impression is evaluated based on parameters such as position (e.g., header vs. footer), ad format, and the quality of the target audience it is displayed to.

To optimize sales, inventory is classified into two main types:

  • Premium Inventory : This is the highest-value inventory, corresponding to the most visible spaces and the most valuable audience. It is sold primarily through direct negotiations by the publisher's sales force as guaranteed inventory , meaning a quantity of impressions reserved for a single advertiser with compensation in the event of non-delivery.

  • Remnant Inventory (or unsold): This is the remaining space, considered non-guaranteed inventory . It is sold automatically, impression by impression, through programmatic platforms such as Ad Exchange or Ad Networks.

3. When is it used / in what context is it useful?

The concept is central to any discussion about the monetization of digital content:

  • Media Planning : Advertisers evaluate inventory from different publishers to decide where to invest their budget.

  • Programmatic Advertising : Platforms such as Ad Exchanges and SSPs (Supply-Side Platforms) are used by publishers to list their unsold inventory for sale.

  • Revenue Analysis : Publishers constantly monitor “fill rate” (the percentage of inventory actually sold) as a key performance indicator.

  • Direct Sales Management : A publisher's sales force negotiates directly with brands to sell premium inventory.

4. Practical example

An online news site has several advertising spaces: a banner at the top of the homepage, a box in the sidebar for each article, and a space for a pre-roll video. If the site receives 1 million visits per month on the homepage, its inventory for the banner at the top will be approximately 1 million impressions per month. This will be considered "premium inventory" and sold directly to a client at a fixed price, as "guaranteed inventory." Unsold impressions from less visible spaces will be auctioned on programmatic platforms such as "remnant inventory."

5. Extra insight

The perception of inventory has changed radically with the advent of programmatic advertising. In the past, the focus was on the quantity of available space. Today, thanks to user profiling, the value has shifted to audience inventory : you're no longer selling just space on a page, but the ability to show an ad to a specific user (e.g., "women, 25-34, interested in travel") wherever they are on the site. This has also made "remnant" inventory much more valuable.
