| Sustain campaign | A sustain campaign is an ongoing communication activity, often with a more modest budget, that follows a launch campaign or a promotional peak. Its purpose is not to create a media "bang", but to keep the product or brand "top of mind" for the consumer, supporting sales in the medium-to-long term and preventing it from being forgotten or overtaken by the competition. What it is for / Why it is importantIt serves to consolidate the results achieved by a larger campaign (like a launch) and to defend market share. It is fundamental during the maturity phase of a product's life cycle: it maintains high visibility, reinforces brand loyalty, and counteracts competitors' actions. It prevents the product from falling into obscurity once the launch spotlight fades. When it is used / In what context it is usefulIt is typically used after the launch phase, to enter the "core" commercial life of the product. It is the "cruise control" communication that a brand implements for most of the year, alternating it with promotional peaks or seasonal campaigns. It is essential in very crowded markets (e.g., fast-moving consumer goods) where competition is constant. Practical exampleAfter launching a new yoghurt with a massive TV and social media campaign in January (launch campaign), the brand plans a sustain campaign from February to May. This will consist of digital banners (display advertising) with low frequency but high reach, organic and sponsored social posts, and small in-store promotions, to constantly remind consumers that the product exists and is good. Extra insightThe sustain campaign is the "marathon" of marketing, whereas the launch is the "100-metre sprint". Often, its success is not measured in sales peaks, but in the stability of the sales baseline. Many "always-on" digital strategies are, in fact, modern sustain campaigns. |
