TermDefinition
Carousel

A carousel is an advertising and communication format that presents multiple pieces of content in sequence, viewable through horizontal scrolling or automatic rotation. Originally a celebrated Italian television format from the 1950s-70s (brief theatrical sketches followed by advertising messages), the term today primarily identifies digital sliders used on websites, social media, and mobile applications. In contemporary digital marketing, the Instagram carousel has become one of the most effective tools for visual storytelling, allowing users to share up to 10 images or videos in a single swipeable post. The format exploits the principle of sequential narration to maintain user attention and convey articulated messages through multiple connected pieces of content.

Purpose / Why it matters

The carousel is a versatile tool that enables complex storytelling, showcasing products from different angles, explaining processes step by step, or presenting creative portfolios without fragmenting the message into separate posts. From an engagement perspective, the carousel format generates higher interaction rates compared to single posts, as it actively invites users to take action (swiping) to discover additional content, increasing dwell time and message memorability. For brands, it represents an opportunity to deepen narratives, educate audiences about product features, share visual tutorials, or create narrative campaigns that unfold across successive slides. Social media algorithms also tend to reward carousels that generate multiple interactions, increasing their organic visibility.

When it's used / Context of application

The carousel format finds application in multiple digital contexts: Instagram and Facebook for brand awareness campaigns and visual storytelling, LinkedIn for professional presentations and detailed case studies, e-commerce to display products from different angles with details and usage contexts, landing pages for rotating testimonials and customer reviews, email marketing to present collections or multiple offers. It's used effectively for before/after content, step-by-step tutorials, segmented infographics, creative project galleries, product comparisons, event highlights, and serialised narrative stories. UX/UI designers also implement carousels in mobile apps for user onboarding, feature showcases, and editorial content presentations. The format is particularly suited when the message requires greater depth than a single visual but must remain concentrated within a unified consumption experience.

Practical example

A cosmetics brand launches a new skincare line on Instagram using an 8-slide carousel. The first image shows attractive packaging with an eye-catching headline, the second explains the problem the product solves, slides 3-6 illustrate four key ingredients with dedicated visuals and brief descriptions, the seventh shows before/after results, and the eighth includes a call-to-action with discount code. Users naturally scroll through the sequence, progressively discovering value and benefits, whilst the algorithm registers the high completion rate and rewards the post with greater visibility. On an e-commerce website, a product carousel allows visitors to view a pair of shoes from different angles: front view, side view, sole, material detail, and worn on a model, reducing uncertainties and increasing conversions.

Extra insight

The carousel represents a perfect example of how traditional advertising formats evolve and adapt to new digital media. The original Italian television Carosello became such an iconic cultural phenomenon that entire generations still remember slogans and characters ("Carmencita and Caballero", "Calimero"), demonstrating the power of narrative seriality in advertising memorisation. In the modern digital context, data shows that users are willing to scroll through an average of 3-5 carousel slides if the initial content captures their attention, making the hook of the first image crucial. An advanced strategy involves positioning the most important CTA on the second slide (not the last), as analytics reveal significant drop-off after the first few swipes. Additionally, carousels can be "recycled" by algorithms: Instagram may show the same post again starting from different slides, offering multiple opportunities for attention capture.
