Don't believe your eyes: the definitive guide to visual perception and illusions in design
Do you trust what you see? Wrong. Your eyes are lying to you right now, whilst you're reading this sentence.
Vision is the sense we rely on most to navigate the world, to avoid danger and, in our case, to judge the beauty and effectiveness of a graphic design project. Yet, I must give you some uncomfortable news: your eyes register raw data, but it's your brain that tells you a story. And sometimes, that story is pure invention.
Welcome to the marvellous, complex and occasionally frustrating world of visual perception.
On this journey we won't simply look at ambiguous figures that change shape. We'll dig into the biological and psychological mechanics of vision to understand how we creatives can – and must – manipulate these rules to communicate better. We'll discuss Gestalt theory, masters of the impossible like M.C. Escher, and how a simple empty space can shout louder than a bold headline.

The brain is a lazy editor (and this saves your life)
To understand optical illusions, we must first grasp how the "machine" works. The human eye is a sophisticated lens, but it isn't a video camera that objectively records reality.
Every second, our eyes are bombarded by millions of bits of visual information: lights, shadows, colours, movements, depth. If the brain had to consciously process every single detail, it would crash within moments.
Evolution, which is a pragmatic designer, has found a solution: cognitive shortcuts.
The brain is programmed to recognise patterns, complete missing information and make predictions based on past experience. It's a survival mechanism. If you see an orange shape with black stripes moving through tall grass, your brain doesn't wait to analyse every single hair to tell you "run, it's a tiger". It tells you "tiger" and floods you with adrenaline.
In design, we exploit this cognitive "laziness". Optical illusions are nothing more than system errors (or glitches, if you prefer) that occur when we apply these shortcuts to artificially created ambiguous situations.
Pareidolia: the superpower of seeing faces everywhere
A classic example of this obsessive search for patterns is pareidolia. Have you ever seen a face in the clouds, on a building's façade or in the foam of your cappuccino?
You're not mad. Our brain is hardwired to recognise human faces as an absolute priority. Why? Because on the savannah 50,000 years ago, quickly understanding another's intentions (friend or foe?) made the difference between dinner and being dinner.
For a graphic designer, knowing this is power. We can make packaging more "friendly" by arranging elements so they subtly suggest a smile, or create logos that become memorable precisely because they activate this specific area of the brain.

The grammar of vision: welcome to Gestalt
If we want to move from simple "visual tricks" to professional design, we must study Gestalt psychology.
Born in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century, this psychological school revolutionised how we understand visual perception. The fundamental mantra is: "The whole is different from the sum of its individual parts".
We don't perceive isolated lines, points and colours; we perceive structured and meaningful forms. Here are the fundamental laws that every visual designer should know by heart.
1. Law of proximity and similarity
Elements close to each other or similar (in shape, colour, size) are perceived as a single group.
Practical application: Think about the layout of a website or brochure. If you place a caption too far from the image, the user won't connect them. If you use icons with different styles in the same menu, you create cognitive disorder.
Visual consistency reassures the brain and guides reading effortlessly.
2. Law of closure (the brain hates things left half-done)
The brain hates things left unfinished. If it sees a partial figure that suggests a familiar shape, it will "close" the gaps autonomously.
The iconic example: Think of the WWF logo. There isn't a complete panda drawn. There are only irregular black patches on a white background. It's your brain that "paints" the white, creating the shape of the panda's head and back.
This active involvement of the observer makes the logo extremely powerful: the viewer "participates" in its creation. And what we co-create, we remember better.
3. Law of continuity
The eye prefers to follow continuous lines and curves rather than broken ones. Once the gaze is directed in one direction, it tends to continue until it encounters a significant obstacle.
In design: We use this principle to guide the user's eye towards a Call to Action. A line, an arrow, or even the gaze of a subject in a photograph directed towards the "Buy" button, exploit continuity to increase conversions.
You don't need a giant arrow with "click here" written on it. A subtle line that accompanies the eye on the right journey is sufficient.
🧪 Experiment: put your brain to the test
Try this yourself, now:
Fix your gaze on the central point of this description for 30 seconds: imagine an intense, vibrant red circle on a white background. Concentrate on the centre of the imaginary red circle. Count slowly to 30.
Now look quickly at a white wall or a blank sheet of paper beside you.
What do you see? A phantom circle in blue-green colour, correct?
This isn't magic. It's your visual system rebelling. We'll discuss this shortly.
Figure and ground: the art of the "unspoken"
Here we enter the most fascinating territory of optical illusions and strategic design: the figure/ground relationship.
In every visual composition, the brain must immediately decide what is the main object (figure) and what is the surrounding environment (ground). Usually it's easy: black text on white paper is figure.
But what happens when we make the boundaries ambiguous?
Visual tension is created, a perceptual instability that captures attention. It's the famous Rubin's vase: do you see a central vase or two lateral profiles looking at each other? You can't see both simultaneously. Your brain makes a rapid "switch" between the two interpretations, and in that microsecond of confusion... you're completely focused.
Negative space: sculpting the void
In graphic design, empty space (or negative space) is never "nothing". It's an active design element just as much as the "full" space. It's matter, not absence.
One of the most celebrated and brilliant examples is the FedEx logo. At first glance it's blue and orange sans-serif lettering. Clean, professional, perhaps a bit anonymous.
But look more carefully between the "E" and the "x".
Do you see the white arrow pointing to the right? Once you've seen it, you can never "unsee" it. That arrow communicates speed, direction, precision, forward movement. And it's made of... nothing. It's pure negative space. It's air that becomes message.
Using negative space requires considerable technical mastery. It means sculpting the void as Michelangelo sculpted marble: removing what isn't needed to let emerge what must exist.
M.C. Escher: the poet of impossible geometries
One cannot write a guide on optical illusions without bowing to the Dutch master Maurits Cornelis Escher. If Gestalt explains the rules to us, Escher teaches us how to break them with mathematical elegance.
Escher wasn't a simple artist; he was an explorer of the infinite and the paradoxical. His works, such as Relativity (those impossible stairs that go in every direction and none at the same time) or Sky and Water (where birds transform into fish through a masterful use of figure/ground), are rigorous studies on geometry and perception.
What do we learn from Escher for contemporary design?
1. Perspective is a lie (and that's fine)
Escher manipulated vanishing points to create impossible architectures that, on paper, seem coherent. In visual storytelling, we can use forced perspectives to give dynamism to static products, make packaging appear larger or a space deeper.
2. Tessellation: patterns that hypnotise
The repetition of identical modules that interlock without leaving empty spaces. It's the basis of modern pattern design, extremely useful in packaging and web design to create background textures that don't weigh down the page but enrich the experience.
3. The infinite loop: the ancestor of the GIF
Many of Escher's works are perfect cycles. Today, seamless GIFs and infinite loop videos on Instagram Stories are direct descendants of Escher. His genius didn't die in 1972: it lives in every hypnotic advertising carousel that keeps you glued to the screen whilst you wait for the Tube.
You see what you know: memory that betrays (or saves) design
Let's return to biology. We've said that the brain uses experience to decode images. This phenomenon is known as the law of past experience.
There's a famous illusion that shows vaguely amorphous dark shapes. An adult, looking at it, will almost certainly see an intimate scene, two lovers embracing. If you show the same identical image to a 5-year-old child, they will see... nine dolphins playing.
Why?
Because in the child's visual "database", the intimate scene doesn't yet exist as a primary archetype. Their mind searches for the closest match: curved, smooth, bouncing shapes = dolphins.
Why is this crucial for marketing and visual communication?
This teaches us a fundamental lesson about target audience. An image is never neutral; its meaning depends entirely on who looks at it.
A symbol that is harmless to one culture might be offensive to another. A visual that for Gen Z is a clear reference to a viral meme, for a Boomer might be incomprehensible digital noise.
When you design, don't just ask yourself "what am I drawing?", but "who will look at it and what baggage of experiences will they use to decode it?". The same image can tell completely different stories to different people.
Colour, light and movement: deceiving the retina
Until now we've discussed shapes. But colour and light offer another extraordinary playground for optical illusions.
Remember the red circle experiment from earlier? Here's the explanation.
The afterimage: when the retina grows tired
What you saw (the blue-green phantom circle) isn't magic, it's pure physiology. On your retina there are photoreceptors called cones, sensitive to colours (red, green, blue).
If you stare intently at a colour (let's say red) for a long time, the cones sensitive to red "tire", temporarily exhausting their neurotransmitters.
When you shift your gaze to white (which contains all colours), the red cones are too tired to activate, whilst those for cyan (the complementary) are fresh and fire at maximum. Result? You see cyan where there is none.
Why should this interest you as a designer?
In design, this principle is fundamental for accessibility and readability. Using vibrant complementary colours (such as red text on green background) creates an annoying "vibration" effect precisely because of this retinal competition.
It's a red pencil error for anyone involved in UX/UI design. It's not a matter of taste: it's a matter of not torturing your users' photoreceptors.
How to use optical illusions in your daily work
After so much theory, let's move to practice. How do we transform all of this into effective communication? Here are concrete strategies you can implement from Monday.
1. The double-reading logo
Don't be afraid to hide meanings. A logo that reveals a second level of reading creates an "A-ha!" moment in the consumer.
Think of the smile hidden in the arrow between the "a" and the "z" of Amazon (which goes from A to Z, indeed). Or the bear hidden in the mountain of Toblerone (reference to the Swiss Alps and the city of Bern, the city of the bear).
That moment of discovery releases dopamine and fixes the brand in long-term memory. It's not subliminal advertising, it's visual intelligence.
2. Typography: less is more (if you know how to manage space)
Use the law of proximity to organise text blocks. You don't need to fill the page with dividing lines or coloured boxes.
Simply manage white space well (leading, kerning, margins) to conceptually group information. Less ink, more clarity. Less noise, more authority.
3. Stop-scroll on social media
On social media, attention lasts milliseconds. An image that exploits a forced perspective, an optical illusion or a figure/ground ambiguity forces the user to stop to "solve the puzzle".
That fraction of a second extra is pure gold for the algorithm. And for your message.
4. Motion graphics: movement without weight
Movement illusions (static images that appear to move thanks to colour contrasts and repetitive patterns) are excellent for attracting attention without weighing down page loading with heavy video files.
Perfect for hero sections of websites, advertising banners, or Instagram stories where video format isn't always necessary.
Ethics of illusion: manipulation or art?
Let's close with a necessary reflection. Knowing the mechanisms of visual perception gives us enormous power. We can guide the eye where we want, make a product appear larger or smaller, hide defects or enhance qualities.
The boundary between "good design" and "deceptive dark pattern" is thin.
Using the law of continuity to guide the user to the "Buy" button is good marketing. Using it to hide the "Unsubscribe" button making it almost invisible through contrast or position, is an unethical dark pattern.
Using negative space to make a logo memorable is art. Using microscopic fonts and very low contrasts in contractual clauses is bad faith.
The objective of Insight, and I hope yours too, is to use visual magic to enchant, clarify and communicate, never to deliberately confuse to the user's detriment. Trust is won once, lost in a second.
Conclusion: you see what you are
Optical illusions remind us of a humble truth: we don't see the world as it is, but as we are. Our perception is a mix of biology, culture, memory and expectation.
As designers, photographers and communicators, our work is to consciously insert ourselves into this interpretative process. We must be the directors of the film that the brain constantly projects.
Study Gestalt, play with negative spaces, let yourself be inspired by Escher's impossible geometries. But above all, always remember to look beyond the first impression.
Because there, in the space between what you see and what you perceive, lies true creativity. And perhaps, a bit of magic too.
